What's O.L.D. is N.E.W. uses a "life-path" system to create and advance characters.

Careers are occupations held by characters.

Characters begin play with one origin and four regular careers.  When choosing a career, the character gains attribute increases, two skill ranks chosen from the list of that career's skills, and selects one exploit from that career's list of unique career exploits. A career may be repeated.

If a career is repeated, addtional grades are referred to by their title, as shown in the table above.

Characters advance by taking new careers or repeating current ones, gaining increased or new attributes, skills, and exploits each time.

The list below contains careers and traditions from O.L.D., N.E.W. and N.O.W.  As always, it is up to the GM what careers or traditions are available in a given setting.

Grade

The total number of grades in all careers/traditions taken by a character is an important value, as it determines the maximum size dice pool that a character can form.  This total number of grades is referred to as the character's grade.
